Kilimanjaro climb requirements: visa, park permit, guide and insurance

Kilimanjaro is in mainland Tanzania: climbing it first requires the e-visa, the NIC insurance and the health form. Added to these are the rules of the national park, run by TANAPA: a licensed operator is compulsory, then park fees and acclimatisation. The summit stands at 5,895 metres, which weighs on the choice of insurance.

What are the entry requirements for flying into Kilimanjaro?

Most climbers arrive at Kilimanjaro airport (JRO), between Moshi and Arusha, or at Arusha (ARK) by a domestic flight; the operator handles the transfer to the park. The mainland formalities apply.

The visa: the tourist e-visa, on visa.immigration.go.tz, at $50.75, for 90 days. There is no special visa for the mountain. The average delay observed by the team is about 7 days: the application is filed at least 14 days before the flight. The passport must be valid 6 months after entry.

The mandatory insurance: arriving at JRO means entering through the mainland, therefore with NIC insurance, at $44 per adult on inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz. It also holds for a later stop in Zanzibar (see mandatory insurance).

The health form Afya Msafiri, mandatory for all since 17 October 2026; the QR code is checked on arrival.

The order follows the delays: book the operator, who fixes the dates; apply for the e-visa; take out the insurance (average delay under an hour) and fill in the form last.

Do I need a permit to climb Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro National Park, created in 1973, covers 1,712 km²; its summit, Kibo, stands at 5,895 metres. It is managed by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).

The “Kilimanjaro permit” is not a document to apply for oneself. The TANAPA visitor guide describes no separate climbing permit: access goes through the park fees, paid by the licensed operator. The passport is carried throughout the climb.

The main gates are Marangu, Machame, Londorossi (Lemosho route) and Rongai; the descent is by Mweka. Only the Marangu route has huts (Mandara, Horombo, Kibo); the others use designated campsites.

The park requires staying on marked routes, lighting no fires and following rangers and guides. Drones need prior park authorisation, on top of the civil aviation permits (see customs).

Can I climb Kilimanjaro without a guide?

No. TANAPA writes it: every climb is led by a licensed operator, and solo hiking is not authorised. Guides and porters are supplied by the operator, who buys the fees and organises transport and camps.

Choosing the operator is therefore the decision that most affects safety. TANAPA publishes no list of licensed operators in the pages consulted: the proof of licence and the guides’ qualifications have to be asked for. The rules on the number of porters or their load are not covered here, for lack of an official text.

Kilimanjaro permit price: who sets the park fees?

The fees are set by TANAPA. They depend on the visitor category (citizen, resident, non-resident), the route and the number of days, and include conservation, camping or hut and rescue fees.

No amount is reproduced here: the TANAPA visitor guide displays none, and operator websites’ price lists differ. The reference is TANAPA’s scale, on tanzaniaparks.go.tz, or the one the operator must produce.

As these fees are calculated by the day, a longer itinerary, better for acclimatisation, costs more. A serious quote shows them separately.

What insurance for climbing Kilimanjaro?

The NIC insurance, at $44, is an entry condition. It covers, according to the NIC, care, medical transport and evacuation, under the terms of the policy, but its limits are not published, and nothing says whether evacuation at altitude is covered.

Private insurance is therefore indispensable. France Diplomatie recommends additional cover for medical costs and repatriation; the FCDO, insurance covering the planned activities and medical evacuation. Three points are checked in the contract: the maximum altitude covered, at least that of the summit; rescue costs, helicopter included; repatriation to the UK or Europe. Some contracts exclude trekking: the clause has to be read.

TANAPA’s rescue fees do not replace this insurance. The insurer’s assistance number is passed to the operator before departure: it is the team that triggers the rescue.

Altitude sickness and yellow fever: health before the climb

Altitude is the first risk. TANAPA recommends an itinerary with acclimatisation days, a slow ascent, good hydration and immediate reporting of any symptom to the guide, as well as warm and rain clothing, a head torch and personal medication. The FCDO refers to TravelHealthPro on altitude sickness; a consultation before departure covers the contraindications.

Yellow fever: Certificate required from age 1 for travellers arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours in, a country at risk. Flights to JRO often go through Nairobi or Addis Ababa. The vaccine is valid only ten days after the injection. The tool below shows whether a stopover makes the certificate necessary.

Not required on paper, but caution is wise. A short stopover does not trigger the rule; a delay that pushes it past 12 hours does.

The rule in detail

Fig. 2Does your stopover make the yellow fever certificate compulsory?

Stopover details are on the yellow fever page.

Malaria concerns the starting towns, Moshi and Arusha: the risk exists all year below 1,800 metres. Fires can occur in the dry season in the park, according to the FCDO: the operator and the authorities are then to be followed.

Frequently asked questions
